Capture Tasmania's dramatic highlands, powerful waterfalls, and moody winter light

I’d love to invite you to join me in winter for a Tasmanian landscape photography workshop with a difference – I call it an adaptive workshop. The concept is beautifully simple – why wouldn’t you want to go wherever the conditions are absolutely ideal for photography?

Instead of booking a fixed location months in advance and hoping the weather cooperates, we wait until just before your workshop to see where Tasmania’s dynamic weather will create the best conditions. You can still let me know your preferred locations and subjects when you book, and if the conditions work out there, great! But if they don’t, we’ll head somewhere beautiful with even better conditions – so you really can’t lose.

I’ve spent years photographing across Tasmania’s incredibly diverse landscapes, and I know that winter here can be absolutely magical when you’re in the right place at the right time. Snow-capped mountains, powerful waterfalls, quiet coastal locations all to ourselves, and those long winter nights for aurora chasing – but only if you’re where the conditions are right.

This approach means when you arrive, you’ll know we’re heading to the best possible conditions for the landscapes you’re most excited to capture. You’ll spend three days with someone who’s passionate about sharing this incredible landscape with you, and together we’ll capture some truly amazing images in locations that will take your breath away.

Potential locations include: Cradle Mountain, Freycinet, Bay of Fires, Tarkine, Southwest National Park, Mount Field, Kunanyi / Mount Wellington, South Arm Peninsula, Tasman Peninsula, Central Highlands, Bruny Island, and Huon Valley.

Your Winter Landscape Photography Workshop in Tasmania

Workshop Dates: July 11-13, 2026

Winter delivers some of my favourite photography conditions in Tasmania. Snow transforms the mountains, creating striking compositions you simply can’t get at other times. The longest nights of the year are perfect for astrophotography and aurora chasing.

Waterfalls are at their most powerful, rainforests stay lush and green, and the coastal locations are beautifully quiet, often giving us these incredible places completely to ourselves. The low sun angle creates this gorgeous soft light that lasts most of the day.

What Makes Winter in Tasmania Special:

  • Snow-capped mountains – dramatic landscape compositions
  • Longest nights – ideal for Milky Way and aurora photography
  • Powerful waterfalls – at peak flow for long exposure work
  • Quiet coastal locations – often entirely to ourselves
  • Extended golden hour – soft, beautiful light all day
  • Lush rainforests – and fascinating fungi specimens

Accommodation

The workshop includes 2 nights of accommodation, which I book based on where conditions will be best as the weather forecast becomes clearer in the days leading up to our departure. I aim for high-quality accommodation where we stay together as a group – this might be a spacious holiday house, boutique hotel, or comfortable cabin depending on the location. Having shared common areas gives us space to review images, work through editing techniques, and discuss the day’s photography over a meal.

I arrange private rooms for each participant wherever possible, though limited availability in popular locations may occasionally require twin share arrangements.

We’ll discuss all accommodation details during our pre-workshop planning session. If you have specific requirements or concerns, please get in touch before booking so we can discuss options

Meals

We’ll eat at local restaurants whenever possible, which allows us great flexibility to match our dining to the photography schedule and discover some fantastic local spots. Each participant covers their own meals, allowing everyone to choose what works best for them. During our planning session, we’ll discuss meal options based on our proposed locations.

Sometimes we’ll eat earlier or later than usual to catch the best light, and occasionally, we might grab supplies for a picnic dinner or prepare simple meals when we’re in remote locations with amazing views. We’ll work out the best approach together to keep everyone well-fed while making the most of our photography opportunities.

Experience Level and What to Expect

Whether you’re just starting out or have years of experience, this workshop will meet you where you are. You’ll receive access to online tutorial videos before we meet to help you prepare, and I’ll provide personalised guidance throughout our time together based on your individual goals and interests.

Our locations are chosen with accessibility in mind – while we may encounter some uneven terrain, we won’t be doing any serious hiking. This is about capturing great images in comfortable, accessible locations where we can focus on the photography rather than the challenge of getting there.

I’ll be photographing alongside you throughout the workshop, so you can see how I approach different scenes, read the light, and adapt to changing conditions. The adaptive nature of our itinerary means we can tailor the experience to suit both your skill level and physical capabilities, ensuring everyone gets the most out of our time together.

As an experienced landscape photographer with years of exploring Tasmania’s diverse landscapes, I bring intimate knowledge of where and when to find the best photographic opportunities across the island. I’ve photographed in all seasons and conditions, building an understanding of how this incredible landscape works and where the magic happens.

I’ll be photographing alongside you throughout the workshop, demonstrating techniques in real-time and helping you develop your own photographic vision. The adaptive approach lets me apply this local knowledge to ensure we’re always chasing the best conditions and most rewarding locations for our photography.
